What Interior Design Style Am I?

Are you struggling to define your interior design style? Choosing the design aesthetic that best suits you and your house might be difficult with the wide variety of options available. We'll look at some of the most popular Australian interior design trends in this post and assist you in deciding which one is best for you.

Mid-Century Modern Style

If you're a fan of Mad Men and anything vintage, then mid-century modern style may be for you. Clean lines, organic shapes, and a focus on function over form. Colours are typically bold and bright, with hues like mustard, burnt orange, olives and timber finishes. Furniture is often low-slung and streamlined with an emphasis on simplicity, design and practicality. Definitely an autumn colour personalities best friend!

Eclectic Style

If you're someone who loves to mix and match different design elements, then eclectic style may be the right fit for you. (HELLO, this is me!) A blend of different styles, colours, and textures. Furniture is often a mix of vintage and modern pieces, with unexpected elements like a colourful rug or a statement piece of art. This is the best story telling interior design. I find pieces from all over the world to add to my interiors. Preloved, new, wacky and wild, there is always someone coming into my home that says “omg, where did you get that from?”

Minimalist Style

If you prefer a more pared-back approach to design, then minimalist style may be the right fit for you. This design style is characterised by a focus on simplicity and functionality, with a neutral including black accents colour palette and a lack of clutter. Furniture is often sleek and simple, with clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic. Popular look for kitchens — white, black and grey for a timeless more adaptable interior design to work with. I find this look will always be a great base to add as your interior design journey grows.

Country Style

If you love the rustic charm of a farmhouse, then country style may be for you. Warm and inviting colour palettes, with earthy tones like beige and brown dominating the décor. Furniture is often made of natural materials like wood and stone and is designed to be comfortable and cozy. In Australia, we never go the full country look unless we are from the country. Often this look is mixed with Hamptons for that ever popular Farmhouse feel.

Coastal Style

If you love the beach and all things seaside, then coastal style may be the right fit for you. This design style is characterised by a light and airy colour palette, with shades of white, beige and greys dominating the decor. Furniture is often made of natural materials like wicker or rattan and is designed to be comfortable and relaxed. This look is super popular at the moment, but think to yourself — does this really reflect my personality, lifestyle and most importantly where you live?

Hamptons Style

Similar to coastal style, Hamptons style is all about creating a relaxed vibe but with more of a classic and refined feel. Think neutral colour palette with accents of navy and white (if you want a more classic look), as well as natural materials like wood and linen. Furniture is often oversized and comfortable, creating a welcoming and inviting space. Americans do the best Hamptons style. Everything is OTT or you can look at pairing it back for a more subtle look.

Boho Style

If you're someone who loves to express their individuality through their decor, then boho style may be the right fit for you. A mix of patterns, colours, and textures, with an emphasis on creating a relaxed and free-spirited atmosphere. Furniture is often a mix of vintage and modern pieces, with eclectic elements like a macrame wall hanging or a Moroccan rug. Colour palettes will be terracottas, pink, warm whites and hints of brass. Remember to add lots and lots of textures.
