Choosing paint colours can feel overwhelming. With thousands of shades available, it’s easy to feel stuck or second-guess yourself. But colour has the power to completely change the mood of your home and with a simple process, you can make confident choices that feel timeless and personal.
At Nikki Weedon Interiors, we believe colour isn’t just about appearance, it’s about how you want your home to feel. This is where colour psychology is so helpful. Neutrals create calm, blues and greens feel restorative and warmer tones bring energy and connection. Think first about mood – do you want the space to feel restful, inviting or energising? That one decision narrows your palette dramatically.
Natural light is another factor that makes all the difference. In Australia, north-facing rooms get even light all day, while south-facing rooms feel cooler and often benefit from warmer tones. East-facing rooms glow in the morning but lose light later in the day, while west-facing rooms can feel intense in the afternoon sun. Always look at how light moves through a room before settling on a colour.
And remember: placement matters. Ceilings, trims and feature walls all change the way colour is read. White ceilings make a room feel taller and brighter, while colour-matched trims create a seamless, contemporary look.
Finally, test before you commit! Large A4 samples are ideal, as you can move them around the room to see how they look at different times of day. If you’re using sample pots, always paint onto white card, never directly on walls – the existing colour underneath will distort the result.
Colour doesn’t have to be daunting. With the right process, you can make choices that feel effortless, balanced and true to you. And if you’d like expert guidance, we’d love to help you create a palette that feels timeless and perfectly suited to your lifestyle.
